There are still a few seats left for an ACC training program that starts this fall in Melita. The program is the result of a partnership between ACC and Canupawakpa Dakota Nation and is prioritized for First Nations participants.

The six-month Comprehensive Health Care Aide program will begin on Sept. 21 and it’s perfect for caring, compassionate people who are ready to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

“We’re really happy to be able to bring this program to Melita,” said Lorraine Johnson, Chair of Contract Training at Assiniboine Community College. “It’s conveniently located near the Canupawapka First Nation, home to several of the students who are already registered. And ACC is always looking for new communities and partners who need the custom training we can provide.”

There is very high demand in the health-care sector for health care aides, and people who graduate from this certificate program could be at work in their new careers by spring. Typically, graduates find jobs in hospitals, care facilities, mental health facilities and community settings, including home care. Graduates are also eligible to receive a block credit transfer of 15 academic credits to ACC’s Practical Nursing Program.

Because the program starts so soon, people who are interested in registering for the Comprehensive Health Care Aide program in Melita should plan to attend an information session, scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 6:30–9:30 p.m. at the Melita Legion Hall. People should come prepared to write the CAAT assessment test, and if possible, should bring their high school transcripts.

Although this program is funded with a priority for First Nations students, other applicants are encouraged to apply, and may be accepted if there are available seats.
