Forty-eight new nursing graduates are entering the health care field after two of the college’s Practical Nursing programs wrapped up earlier this month in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie.

Thirty students graduated from the two-year Practical Nursing diploma program on May 12 in Winnipeg. This was the largest graduating class to date from the college’s Winnipeg Campus. Fifteen of the 30 graduated with distinction, meaning they achieve an average GPA of 4.0 or higher during their studies.

Eighteen students graduated from the Practical Nursing program offered in Portage la Prairie on May 13, ten of them with distinction. Portage was chosen as a rural rotating site, meaning that it does not have biannual intakes as the college’s Victoria Avenue East (Brandon) and Winnipeg campuses do. The program was delivered out of Southport, a site in very close proximity to Portage la Prairie.

ACC’s two-year Practical Nursing diploma program teaches clinical nursing skills in a laboratory setting as well as applied skills in acute and extended care health facilities, personal care homes, community agencies and private homes. In the last three years, 99 per cent of graduates were employed in occupations related to their training.

Since 1999, ACC has delivered the Practical Nursing program in rural rotating sites in addition to its permanent sites at campuses in Brandon and Winnipeg.

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM) provincially accredits ACC’s Practical Nursing program. Once graduates have passed the national licensure exam, they are eligible to work as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) under membership with the CLPNM.
