The Assiniboine Cougars women’s hockey team continues to add competitive Midget AAA players to the 2017-18 roster. The team has received commitments from Brooklyn Elek from Regina, Saskatchewan; Erin Doherty of Morden, Manitoba; and Blair Bodie of Thompson, Manitoba.

Elek is a goaltender with strong fundamental skills who provides confidence to her team in net. Her 9 wins in 10 games this season for the Prince Albert Northern Bears of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League speaks towards her competitiveness and ability. So far this season she has recorded a 1.92 goals against average and a solid .912 save percentage along with two shutouts.

Elek is excited to play for Assiniboine in their second year in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). “I thought that if you weren’t committed by grade 11, you weren’t going to play at college or university,” said Elek. “And it’s a college, so it has programs that interest me.” Elek will be taking the comprehensive health care aide (CHCA) program with the intention of furthering her education at Assiniboine in practical nursing.

Doherty is the third player to commit to the Cougars from the Pembina Valley Hawks AAA Midget program. Doherty is a solid defensive forward that can shut down many offensive players. The Cougars look forward to having her strong play on the defensive side of the puck. She brings a hard work ethic which proves to be contagious on her current team. Doherty will also provide some much needed scoring in key situations for the team.

Doherty brings a level of enthusiasm and leadership to the ice which will transfer nicely into her academics as she is enrolled in business administration and will specialize in accounting. Also a multi-sport athlete, Doherty has competed in a number of high school sports at Morden Collegiate including golf, softball and basketball. She was also a member of both league and Provincial championship teams playing at the bantam level.

Bodie currently plays for the Norman Wild Female AAA Midget team. She is a solid defender that will add grit and finesse to the Cougars line up. She has a strong work ethic, challenging any opposition player along the boards, in the corners and in open ice.

Bodie will be taking ACC’s Early Childhood Education program with the intent to further her education and become a teacher. In 2016, Bodie was named the Wild’s “Most Dedicated Player” and “Players Player.” Bodie is also a multisport athlete competing in soccer, badminton and track and field at RD Parker Collegiate.
