The Assiniboine Cougars women’s volleyball team has strengthened their recruiting class for the 2017-18 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) season with the addition of Skyla Vanmackelbergh and Kalin Winter.

Skyla Vanmackelbergh is a six foot, left side from Deloraine, Manitoba. She played volleyball throughout high school at Deloraine Collegiate as well as for Club West, Big Bear and Cats club volleyball teams. She was named an all-star in grade eleven when her high school team won a bronze medal at provincials and most recently she was named a 2017 graduating all-star.

Vanmackelbergh is part of her school’s Social Justice Club and volunteers twice a week to prepare and distribute for Deloraine Collegiate’s Healthy Snack Program. She will be taking Business Administration at Assiniboine with the hopes of opening her own business one day.

“I love the competitive nature of volleyball and am excited to play with the Cougars next year,” says Vanmackelbergh.

“Skyla is one of the most dynamic attackers in Westman,” says head coach Jeff Maxwell. “She can make contact on balls that most girls would never get to.”

Kalin Winter hails from Elie, Manitoba. She is a 5’6 setter having played volleyball at St. Paul’s Collegiate and for the Red River Rebels club team. Winter won a provincial club championship in 2016, high school zone championship in 2016 and was a 2016 high school provincial finalist. She was captain of her high school team and is also a graduating all-star.

Winter grew up on a farm and her family owns an independent retail business. This sparked her interest in Agribusiness, which she will be taking at the college in September.

“I am excited to attend ACC not only to study Agribusiness but also to play a sport that I love and be a part of the Cougars!” says Winter.

“Kalin is a complete athlete both setting and hitting,” says Maxwell. “Shifting her focus to setting, she is going to be one of the top setters in our league.”
