A six-month Applied Electrical Installation program is starting at Assiniboine Community College’s Parkland Campus this September for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students who reside off of reserve.

The college is now accepting applications from those interested in enrolling in the program, with space for 14 students.

The delivery of the program is being made possible through funding from the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP), with the college having secured funding through a recent call for proposals from CAP.

“We are excited to be partnering with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples once again, bringing much-needed trades training to the Parkland region,” says Lorraine Johnson, Chair of Contract Training at Assiniboine. “Our Indigenous partners often express that there is a need for trades training targeted to their communities.”

“This program will follow on the heels of a similar one funded through Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. That program that has been very successful,” she added.

The Applied Electrical Installation program includes a broad base of theoretical and hands-on training. It is accredited by Apprenticeship Manitoba and meets the Level 1 Electrician in-school technical training standard.

The program will run full-time, Monday to Friday from September 2017 to March 2018.

Admission requirements include Grade 12 and Math 40S or special admissions. Those interested in learning more about the program and applying may contact the Parkland Campus at 1.204.622.2222 (toll-free at 1.800 862 6307 ext 0) or parklandinfo@assiniboine.net.
