Cougars Weekend Re-Cap: A busy weekend of volleyball, futsal, and hockey

The Cougars volleyball, futsal, and hockey teams were all in action this weekend. The volleyball teams started the action off in Winnipeg taking on the Red River College Rebels Friday night and again Saturday afternoon, while the futsal teams hosted Red River College and the Université de Saint-Boniface. The women's hockey team was in Duluth, MN to take on the University of Minnesota Duluth

The Cougars volleyball, futsal, and hockey teams were all in action this weekend.  The volleyball teams started the action off in Winnipeg taking on the Red River College Rebels Friday night and again Saturday afternoon, while the futsal teams hosted Red River College and the Université de Saint-Boniface.  The women's hockey team was in Duluth, MN to take on the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday night and Sunday morning.

 

The men’s volleyball started the weekend game action off at 6 p.m. at Red River College losing the first set 19-25, followed by the second set 20-25.  They rebounded in the third set to win it 26-24, but ultimately lost the game with the fourth set 21-25.  Braden Campbell led the team with 15 kills, followed by Jordan Todd with 14 kills, while Leo McArthur also added on another 5 kills.  Dominique Miranda led the night with 13 digs.

 

The women's volleyball team played after the men’s match and unfortunately lost in three straight sets to the Rebels (19-25, 17-25, 23-25).  Skyla Vanmackelbergh and Erica Scott led the team with 9 kills each, while Brittany Bachmier and Erica Scott led the team in digs with 11 each.

 

Saturday Men’s volleyball action kicked off at noon at Red River College.  The Cougars lost in three straight sets to the Rebels (14-25, 20-25, 20-23).  Braden Campbell led with 13 kills followed by Jordan Todd with 5 kills, Leo McArthur also added 5 kills. Dominique Miranda led with 13 digs and again, and Jordan Todd added 5 digs.

 

The women’s volleyball team followed the men’s match, losing three sets in a row to the Rebels (19-25, 13-25, 22-25). Erica Scott led with 13 kills and Skyla Vanmackelbergh with 7 kills, while Brittany Bachmier led with 16 digs and Skyla Vanmackelbergh had 12 digs.

 

11 a.m. saw the futsal action get underway at the Assiniboine Community College gymnasium, with the men’s team first taking on the Red River College Rebels.  The Rebels were up 6-2 at the half.  The score doubled in the second half, for the Rebels to win the game 12-4.  Fernando Castro scored twice for the Cougars, while Jonathon Alvarado and Alex Alvarado each chipped in singles.

 

The women's futsal team took on the Rebels next at 12:30 p.m.  The Rebels led 5-1 at halftime.  The final score was 8-1 with Jenn Hoff scoring the lone goal for the Cougars.

 

Saturday the men’s futsal team took on Les Rouges.  The final score of the game was 8-3 for Les Rouges, Graeme Wilson led the game with 2 goals, while Fernando Castro chipped in scoring once. 

 

The women’s futsal team took on Les Rouges next and the Cougars lost 13-0.

 

The women’s hockey team took on University of Minnesota Duluth , the puck dropped at 7 pm.  The Cougars defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth 1-0.  The goal was scored by Erin Doherty, and assisted by Alyssa Alderson and Mariah McCue.  Brooke Elek had the shutout.  Shots were 33-26 for the Cougars.

 

On Sunday, the women’s hockey team had a rematch against the University of Minnesota Duluth at 11:45 am for their final game of the regular season. It was a close game, but the Cougars lost in overtime, 2-1.  They close out the regular season with a 19-4-0-4 record.  Sierra Parenteau scored for the Cougars, and assisted by Alyssa Neufeld and Lauren Blight.  The Cougars are waiting for the final rankings to see if they go to American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 Nationals in March.

 

Next weekend the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships will be held at Red River College Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25.  The Cougars women’s volleyball team has qualified to play in the Championships.  

 

The Cougars futsal teams have a weekend off and play again March 3 in Winnipeg against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers, followed by games against the Providence University College Pilots in Otterburne, MB
