14 graduate from safety training in Long Plain

After a week of intensive training delivered by Assiniboine Community College, 14 young adults in Long Plain First Nation have achieved workplace safety training that will help them be competitive in the construction industry.

Students, who were mostly between 18-24, achieved certification in H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, WHMIS, Confined Space Entry, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Fall Arrest, many of which are required courses for construction or industrial worksites.

Traditionally, this type of training has only been available outside of the community, making it difficult for Long Plain residents to become qualified for construction work. However Long Plain was able to arrange for local training through ACC’s customized training arm.

Community-based training gives residents of Long Plain First Nation better access and better end results when the training is delivered within the community. Through community-based training, the trainees overcome some of the barriers that they would normally face — barriers such as being away from family or difficulty with transportation — allowing them to concentrate on their training rather than focus on the barriers.

Three graduates were able to find employment the following week.

Congratulations to these graduates!
