Designing Our Spaces and Places

program spotlight: Civil Technician

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for building our roads, bridges, highways, and other infrastructure? Civil technicians are the hands-on members of civil engineering teams—the folks responsible for designing the spaces and places where we live, work and play.

If you have good math skills, like project coordination and are interested in the construction of infrastructure, this could be the career path for you! You’ll work with civil engineers, reading/reviewing blueprints, inspecting project sites and evaluating contractors’ work to ensure it meets code requirements. It’s a job that has you both working in an office and onsite, inspecting conditions and progress.

At Assiniboine, start your Civil Technician journey by enrolling in our 12-month Civil Technician certificate program. Here, you’ll develop your problem-solving skills and strengthen your skillset through drafting, surveying and computer-aided design. Through lab work and projects, you will be able to design infrastructure projects for your community. Whether you want to invent a new solution or research existing solutions for longstanding problems, you will find that your practical experience can make life better where you live. A sixteen-week co-op will give you the hands-on experience, confidence and industry connections to jump into the workforce after graduation.

Or, if you’re looking for further education once you’ve completed your certificate, consider taking Assiniboine’s Civil Technology diploma program. Specializing in Municipal Engineering Technology, this two-year program gives you the opportunity to delve even deeper. Learn about terrain analysis, fluid mechanics, geotechnical materials, groundwater flow and analysis, roadway design, and water and wastewater piping system design—all with an emphasis on project management. In second year, students plan and create an Applied Research Project, utilizing the skills honed throughout the program. They also participate in an additional two co-operative work placements to gain further experience in real-life industry conditions.
