Collections Assistant

Daly House Museum

Overview

We are looking for a Collections Assistant to provide support for key programming at the Museum including leading Museum tours and acting as an ambassador for external and internal events. The Assistant will also be performing a room-base collections assessment – inspecting and documenting artifacts. The Collections Assistant will also produce an exhibition based on their research and work with the collection.
The Collections Assistant under the supervision of the Curator will:
1. Learn about Brandon and Western Manitoba’s history through researching and cataloguing artifacts in Daly House Museum’s collections that can be used to create an exhibit on based on a topic of the successful candidate’s choice.

2. Create weekly social media posts related to the Museum and its collections.

3. Other duties will include, but are not limited to conducting general public tours, assisting researchers with information searches, carrying out the opening and/or closing of the Museum, retail services, answering phones and responding to emails; maintaining period rooms and representing the Museum at community events

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ideal level of education – Post-Secondary
• Fields of Study: History, Museum Studies, Archival Studies, Art History, Culture Heritage Studies, and communications or other similar disciplines
• Written and oral fluency in English. A second language is an asset but not required.
• Strong interpersonal communication and written communication skills
• Ability to multi-task efficiently and cooperate within a small team is a must.
• Experience with the following is an asset: Microsoft Office, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), WordPress, Canva, Photoshop
• Possess basic research skills using paper-based and electronic sources
• Be able to work weekends and occasional evenings
• Be able to climb stairs and ladders and lift heavy objects
• Will meet all requirements for Young Canada Works including:
• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
• be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• have finished the school term at the start of employment;
• be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;
• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week);
• have been a registered full-time student in the year leading up to this date and will be returning to full time studies upon completion of this job.
