Business students at Assiniboine Community College who specialize in Human Resources will automatically be one step closer to receiving their professional designation upon graduation, thanks to a new agreement with the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba (HRMAM).

Those who complete their studies in good academic standing from the two-year Business Administration diploma program with a Human Resource specialization will be able to forgo the National Knowledge Exam (NKE), instead receiving academic credit equivalent to passing this exam. This is a distinct advantage for ACC graduates as the NKE itself is no easy feat — the average pass rate is only 60 per cent.

“We’re proud to be the first post-secondary institution in the province to receive accreditation with the HRMAM,” said Derrick Turner, Dean of Business, Agriculture & Environment at ACC. “It speaks to the calibre of our business program and quality of instruction students receive inside the classroom.”

“The post-secondary accreditation program was launched nationally in January 2016. HRMAM is excited to have our first institution accredited. We’ll be announcing more partners very soon,” said Ron Gauthier, Chief Executive Officer, HRMAM. “Incorporating post-secondary training into the CHRP designation is an important step in advancing the designation and providing greater value for the business community.”

The NKE is a required step for many pursuing their Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, which is the national industry standard of excellence for those working in the field. The CHRP designation requires an individual to achieve and maintain demonstrated competency and experience relevant to the HR profession. Many careers in the field require the CHRP designation.

HRMAM is the sole certifying body in Manitoba for the nationally recognized CHRP designation.

The accreditation was publically announced earlier today at the Westman HR Conference: Solution Focused HR held at the Victoria Inn, an event organized by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Brandon and Entrepreneurship Manitoba, sponsored by the HRMAM.

ACC Business Administration graduates who specialize in Human Resources secure careers related to personnel administration; staffing, training and development; labour relations, compensation management; and collective bargaining.
