Cougars Weekend Re-Cap: Women's futsal tie with the Bobcats

The Cougars men’s and women’s volleyball and futsal teams both had Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference league games here in Brandon this past weekend. The volleyball teams hosted the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers January 26 and 27 at Assiniboine Community College, while the futsal teams were across town in the Henry Champ Gym, playing the Brandon University Bobcats.

The Cougars men’s and women’s volleyball and futsal teams both had Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference league games here in Brandon this past weekend.  The volleyball teams hosted the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers January 26 and 27 at Assiniboine Community College, while the futsal teams were across town in the Henry Champ Gym, playing the Brandon University Bobcats.

 

The men’s volleyball game started at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 26.  The Blazers won the first set 25-22, but after lots of back and forth in the second set, the Cougars came back to win it 25-22.  The Blazers rebounded and took the third set 25-14 and continued on to win the fourth set 25-20 for the game.  Braden Campbell led the Cougars with 12 kills, followed by Jordan Todd with 7 kills and Dominique Miranda had an impressive 11 digs.

 

The women’s match followed and the Blazers took the first set 25-16.  The Cougars rebounded in the second set, but the Blazers hung on to win the set 25-23 and continued on to win the third set 25-21 for the game.  Erica Scott had 12 kills, while Brittany Krahn had 6 kills.  Morgan Donald and Kalin Winter each had 2 blocks.

 

The men’s futsal game began at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 26 over at Brandon University, where they played the Bobcats.  The Bobcats were up 5-0 at half-time and won the game 12-3.  Fernando Castro scored two goals for the Cougars and Mario Urias scored one goal.

 

At 7:30 p.m. the women’s futsal match got underway in the Henry Champ gym against the Bobcats.  Erin Doherty of the Cougars scored within the first minute of play.  The Cougars held this lead through half-time and 15 minutes into the second half, before the Bobcats managed to tie it up 1-1.  The game finished in the tie of 1-1.

 

Saturday, January 27 the volleyball teams took another swing at the Blazers with the men playing at 12 noon and the women at 1:30 p.m.  It was an exciting first set, with the Blazers and the Cougars going back and forth, but the Blazers won it 25-23.  They continued onto win the game with set scores of 25-18, and 25-23.  Braden Campbell led the Cougars again with 13 kills, and Jordan Todd following with 9 kills.  Dominique Miranda led the team in digs, with 9.

 

After a lot of back and forth the Blazers won the first set of the woman's match 25-23.  The second set was a battle until the end with the Cougars coming out on top, 31-29.  The Cougars came from behind in the third set to win it 26-24.  The Blazers rebounded in the fourth set to win it 25-22, to tie the game up at 2-2.  The Blazers won the fifth and deciding set 15-9.  Skyla Vanmackelbergh lead the Cougars with 17 kills, while Erica Scott had 15 and Bryanna Sutlic had 12.  Brittany Bachmier had 17 digs while Brittany Krahn contributed 4 blocks.

 

The Cougars are back at next weekend in Winnipeg, where the men’s and women's volleyball teams take on the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3.  February 2 the men play at 6 p.m. and the women at 7:30 p.m. and on February 3 the men play at 12 noon and the women at 1:30 p.m.

 

The futsal teams play their first home games on Saturday, February 3 when they take on the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers, followed by the Providence University College Pilots.  Futsal game times on February 3, at Assiniboine Community College:

Men vs Canadian Mennonite University Blazers: 11 a.m.

Women vs Canadian Mennonite University Blazers: 12:30 p.m.

Men vs Providence University College Pilots: 3 p.m.

Women vs Providence University College Pilots: 4:30 p.m.

 

The women’s hockey team travels to Thunder Bay, ON to play Lakehead University February 2, at 6 p.m.  On February 3 they play Bishop University at 10 a.m., followed by Iowa State University at 4 p.m.
