Cougars Weekend Re-Cap: Women's volleyball sweeps Université de Saint-Boniface

All of the Cougars teams were in action this past weekend. The women’s hockey team was on the road in Thunder Bay, ON to participate in the Lakehead University tournament, while the men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in Winnipeg to play Université de Saint-Boniface, and the men’s and women’s futsal team hosted Canadian Mennonite University as well as Providence University College.

All of the Cougars teams were in action this past weekend.  The women’s hockey team was on the road in Thunder Bay, ON to participate in the Lakehead University tournament, while the men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in Winnipeg to play Université de Saint-Boniface, and the men’s and women’s futsal team hosted Canadian Mennonite University as well as Providence University College.

 

The women's hockey team played the Lakehead University Thunderwolves on Friday, February 2 at 6 p.m.  The Cougars fell 2-0 to the third ranked Thunderwolves.  Brooklyn Elek was in net for the Cougars.  

 

The women’s volleyball team took on the Les Rouges first at 6 p.m. on February 2.  The Cougars won the game 3 sets to 1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-13, 25-13).  Skyla Vanmackelbergh led the team with 10 kills, while Bryanna Sutlic served up 6 aces, and Jordyn Paddock had 15 digs.

 

The men’s game followed at 7:30 p.m. and saw the Les Rouges win in three sets (25-18, 25-11, and 25-19).  Braden Campbell had 8 kills, while captain Jordan Todd led with 9 digs and Luk Kingdon contributed 5 more digs.

 

Saturday, February 3 the women's hockey team took on Bishop University at 10 a.m. for their second game of the tournament.  The Cougars defeated Bishop University 5-3.  Rachel Charles scored a hat trick for the Cougars, while Erin Doherty and Kenzie Heide each contributed single goals.  The Cougars then took on Iowa State University at 4 p.m. for their third game, which they won 3-0. Sierra Parenteau scored twice for the Cougars and Lauren Blight scored once.  Brooklyn Elek was in net for the shut-out.  This put the Cougars in the final Sunday morning.

 

The men’s futsal team began the action against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers at 11 a.m. at Assiniboine Community College.  The Blazers were up 3-1 at the half and hung onto to that lead to win the game 5-3.  Goal scorers for the Cougars were rookie Theo Bosc, captain Alex Alvarado, and Fernando Castro.

 

The woman's futsal play got underway at 12:30 p.m.  The Blazers were up 5-1 at half-time, but the Cougars held them to one goal in the second half for a 6-1 win.  Tatiana Lopez Beltran scored the lone Cougars goal.

 

Futsal action continued with afternoon games against the Providence University College Pilots.  The men’s game was an exciting, close scoring game that saw the Pilots up 3-2 at the half.  They managed to hang onto the lead to win the game 7-6.  Mario Urias scored 3 goals for the Cougars, while Alex Alvarado scored twice, and Theo Bosc chipped in a single goal.

 

The women had a competitive first half to their futsal match against the Pilots, holding them to 2 goals at the half.  The Pilots won the game 5-0.

 

Volleyball got underway at the Université de Saint-Boniface at 12 noon with the men’s game.  The Cougars lost three straight (18-25, 17-25, and 11-25).  Braden Campbell, Jordan Todd, and Leo McArthur each had 4 kills.  Braden Campbell also had 6 digs and Jordan Todd had 5.

 

The women’s game followed at 1:30 p.m. and they were again triumphant in 4 sets, beating the Les Rouges 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-15, and 25-21).  Skyla Vanmackelbergh led the Cougars again with 14 kills, while captain Erica Scott had 12 kills and 20 digs.  Setter, Kalin Winter served up 4 aces.

 

Sunday morning the women’s hockey team was in the tournament final where they had a rematch against the host team the Lakehead Thunderwolves.  The game went into overtime with the Thunderwolves winning 3-2.  Sierra Parenteau and Alyssa Alderson scored for the Cougars and Miranda Cook was in net.

 

Next weekend the hockey and futsal teams will be back in action.  The women's hockey team is headed to Wisconsin where they will play the University of Wisconsin Stout Friday, February 9 at 10:30 p.m. followed by games on Saturday and Sunday against the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.  Puck drops at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 10 and at 9 a.m. on Sunday February, 11.

 

The men’s and women’s futsal teams host their cross-town rivals the Brandon University Bobcats at the Assiniboine Community College gymnasium, with the men playing at 6 p.m. and the women at 7:30 p.m.
