Ashley Friesen, Drew Curtis and Hanna Weflen have all committed to the Cougar women's soccer team for the 2019 season.

Friesen hails from Carman, Manitoba. She played volleyball and basketball in high school, but Carman Collegiate doesn’t have a high school soccer team. Instead, Friesen has primarily honed her soccer skills in the Eastman Soccer League competing with the Morden U18 Female Soccer team.

“I’m excited to get to play college level soccer and get to know all the girls playing on the team,” said Friesen.

“Ashley is a competitive player that wins 50/50 balls,” said head coach Mark Murray. “She will bring strength to our mid-field.”

Curtis and Weflen are both Brandon products and attended Vincent Massey High School. Both are multisport athletes. Weflen plays soccer and volleyball and enjoys running. Curtis plays soccer, basketball, golf, cross-country, track, pickleball and badminton. She placed third in the 1500m race in her grade nine year and third in the medley race and 3000m race this last season. She has received coach’s awards for both track and cross-country.

“I was drawn to the college because of the courses offered dealing with food and restaurant management,” said Curtis. “The fact I am able to play a sport I love alongside getting my education is awesome.”

“Drew is fit and that gives her an edge,” said Murray. “I’m looking forward to coaching an athlete of her calibre next season.”

“After a year off, I’m really looking forward to going back to school in the fall, joining the Cougars and continuing to play soccer,” said Weflen.

“Hanna brings some good soccer experience to our program,” said Murray. “We expect she will be able to help elevate the Cougars level of play.”

Friesen will take the college’s Business Administration program in the fall while Curtis will start Culinary Arts and Waflen will take Land and Water Management.
