Work Opportunities

There are several opportunities for full-time international students to work in Canada.

Working On Campus

You may work on-campus at the institution in which you are studying. You do not need a work permit to work on-campus.

Co-Op/Internship/Practicum (If the work is integral to your academic program)

If your program has a compulsory, paid or unpaid work practicum or cooperative education component, you are entitled to work during the co-op/work experience period. You must apply for a work permit for this period. This work permit restricts you to working only in your field of study.

Off-Campus Work Program (Part-Time)

Starting on June 1, 2014, international students can use their study permit to work in any type of employment for up to 20 hours per week and full-time during breaks. Check the IRRC website carefully for information relevant to you. You must continue to maintain full-time student status (60% course load minimum) and achieve acceptable marks (2.0 GPA) to remain eligible. Please visit for more information.

Post-Graduate Work Permit

Students who have completed a program of at least eight months may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit that allows them to work for the number of months equalling the duration of their program. (For example, students completing an eight-month program can get a Post-Graduation Work Permit for eight months. However, students who complete a two year diploma may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit that allows them to work in Canada for up to three years.)

Volunteer Work

You may volunteer in Canadian organizations. Many organizations have volunteers who provide a variety of services. These positions are unpaid, and volunteers may not do the work of regular paid employees. You do not need a work permit for these positions.
