Heavy Duty Equipment Technician
Duration/Start: 2 years / September
Skilled technicians are in demand to service the booming activity in the agricultural equipment, heavy equipment and truck and transport industries. ACC’s 20-month Heavy Duty Equipment Technician diploma program provides training in the highly technical heavy equipment service field. If you’re eager to learn and accept complex challenges, this program is for you.
Our program is located at the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology at ACC's North Hill Campus. Completed in 2010, this 130,000 square foot facility features innovative machine shops, laboratories, computer labs and classrooms.
Our grads have a significant advantage when getting a job or entering an apprenticeship program—you’ll acquire solid fundamental skills and enjoy hands-on experience with equipment in our spacious, up-to-date shop and labs. We emphasize basic theory and practical training in the operation, service, diagnosis, and repair of heavy duty equipment.
First year training includes workplace safety, diesel engines, power trains, and electrical systems, along with related shop skills. You’ll later explore various systems responsible for electronic and computerized control, monitoring, diesel and gasoline fuel, air-conditioning, hydraulics, steering, suspension and advanced braking, as well as equipment service and operation.
Our program is flexible—grads interested in a career in the heavy equipment trade earn apprenticeship credits, while others use their skills and knowledge to benefit their family-run agricultural or heavy duty businesses. You’ll be ready to take over entry-level roles in various industries like construction, agriculture, transport, mining, oilfield, and logging, with jobs as technicians in the farm machinery, transport truck and construction equipment sectors.
