Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a Master Gardener?

    Master Gardeners volunteer their time to assist people with horticulture in their own communities. They share their knowledge and experience with fellow gardeners, friends, neighbours, youth and seniors. This sharing consists of a varied range of activities that may include:

    • answering a garden phone-in line for your community
    • designing, planting or maintaining community gardens in public places such as hospitals, schools, parks, etc.
    • developing horticultural therapy programs
    • writing a garden column for our newsletter or for your local paper
    • teaching gardening classes for your local community colleges, associations or recreation departments
  • How long does it take to become certified as a Master Gardener?

    Each person’s timeline is unique. Some people finish the core courses of the program in one year. Others may take several years to complete the core courses. However, students have a maximum of 5 years to complete the program.

  • Do I need the Sustainable Gardening manual at each course?

    No, course materials are handed out at each course. However, throughout the educational training, students are encouraged to work on the home study portion of the course materials by reviewing the manual.

  • Where can I can find volunteer opportunities?

    There are a number of ways Master Gardeners in Training can obtain their volunteer hours such as the ones listed above.   • Do volunteer hours need to be approved before I begin?

    No, as long as Master Gardeners in Training are working within a horticulture-based organization and not independently hours will be accepted.

  • How long do I have to complete the internship?

    Students have one year (within any year of their choosing) to obtain 40 hours of volunteer time.

  • Is the exam open book and how long do I have to complete the exam?

    Yes, the exam is an open book exam that is sent by mail. Student have 3 weeks to complete the exam and mail back to ACC.
