Careers & Connections

Opportunities for employment are expanding as society’s need for self-growth and self-awareness of individuals and groups increases. Graduates will find a broad range of entry level employment opportunities in areas such as family services, health care organizations, youth-service organizations, educational services, care-giving and other similar community service organizations. The certificate program is not designed to provide you with a professional counselling qualification, thus you will not be qualified to act as a professional counsellor.

The program trains you as a para-professional, skilled helper and/or support worker in a counselling related field. Employment opportunities exist mainly for support role staff rather than professional areas. Examples of employment opportunity would be as a counsellor and intake/support staff or teacher and Education Assistant.

Some of the employment roles that our graduates have obtained include:

  • Support Worker (Youth and Adult)
  • Case Aide
  • Counselling Facilitator (educational, crisis, domestic violence, etc.)
  • Educational Assistant
  • Student Advisor
  • Intake Worker
  • Group Home Worker
  • Support Facilitator
  • House Lead
  • Administrative Assistant

As part of our program revision process, there are now two courses in the Applied Counselling Skills Certificate that are directly transferable into the Social Service Worker diploma program here at Assiniboine Community College.

Assiniboine has a number of agreements with other colleges, universities and professional organizations, making it possible to apply credit taken at Assiniboine to programs at other institutions. For up-to-date information on agreements, visit Assiniboine’s Articulation Agreements page.
