Assiniboine College’s Student Achievement Celebration brought together more than 70 Assiniboine College students Friday to honour them for their contributions in academics, athletics and community involvement.

“Student engagement, both inside and outside of the classroom, helps to foster a vibrant college community and creates positive memories for graduates for years to come,” said Danielle Adriaansen, Vice President Enrolment. “Celebrating students for their accomplishments in academics, extra-curricular activities, service and athletics is a wonderful part of the Assiniboine experience, and we’re thrilled to offer a special night to recognize and applaud them.”

Fifty students received One to Watch awards from the college, selected by program faculty based on academic merit, leadership, contributions to student life, community involvement and volunteerism.

Brooklyn Franklin received the One to Watch Award for the Legal Administration program.

“After two years of balancing school along with playing Cougars hockey and working part-time, being noticed for my commitment to school is very rewarding,” said Franklin, who plans to continue her education with the goal of attending law school.

“Taking the Legal Administration program has increased my interest in working in the legal field and has provided me with the foundational knowledge and skills I will need as I move forward,” she said. “My favorite part of the program was being able to get out and see all the different types of businesses throughout the legal system.”

Another One to Watch recipient, Nicolette Beaupre, said she was honoured to have her name put forward for the award.

“I loved so many things about my program, including all the amazing people I got to meet, but my favourite part was learning and growing as a person, both academically and spiritually, as this program has given me many opportunities to learn new skills and things about myself that I couldn’t learn elsewhere, and to me, that is such a huge gift,” said Beaupre, an Office Skills student. She intends to continue into Assiniboine’s Office Management program next year.

“I will use this award as a symbol of encouragement to motivate myself further down a path of learning, healing and growing so I can better serve my community each day,” she said.

In addition to the college’s One to Watch awards, the Assiniboine College Students’ Association presented four awards recognizing students for their leadership and engagement on campus.

Cougars Athletics presented 23 awards to student athletes, including MVP and Coaches Choice awards for each Cougars team. Gerardo Alas was named as Male Athlete of the Year and Kylee Peake is the Female Athlete of the Year, adding to an All-Canadian recognition from the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference she received earlier this year.
