Agricultural Ecology Research Assistant

Overview

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is seeking motivated and innovative students to work in Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-Food sector. AAFC offers students positions at the Brandon Research and Development Centre providing valuable work experience through practical and meaningful employment. The successful applicant will participate and acquire skills in scientific studies focused on evaluating the health of grassland and pasture plant communities and soil. Under the supervision of scientific staff, duties will include: preparing for field work; disinfecting vehicles and small equipment; collecting and processing soil and plant samples; making plant community observations; and entering and quality-checking data. Additional opportunities may include assisting with woodland and riparian health assessments; collecting samples and data related to fungi, insects and birds or other wildlife; and creating documents related to photographic data collections.

Working conditions:
• Working with a small team and working alone for a few hours
• Working around farm equipment, hand tools, ovens and grinders
• Exposure to flies, beetles, worms, wood ticks, spiders, mosquitoes, sun, rain, humidity, noise, dust, rodents, soil, plants
• Some travel outside of Brandon is required
• Must be able to crouch, bend, carry up to 5-10 kgs, walking over uneven terrain

Hours of Work: Monday – Friday, 7.5 hours per day / 37.5 hours per week

Additional Information:
This is an on-site position. Brandon Research & Development Centre, Brandon, Manitoba, does not have public transportation access to our facility nor housing accommodations. You will be required to provide your own transportation to the Centre. If you need to relocate, you will be required to locate your own housing in Brandon and to pay your own relocation and housing costs.

To be eligible for the Post-secondary Co-op/Internship Programs, you must:
• Have full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled; and
• Be enrolled in a PSC approved Co-op/Internship program.

Citizenship: Preference will be given to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents (see definitions below)

A Canadian Citizen is a person who is Canadian by birth or who has applied for Canadian citizenship through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and has received a Citizenship Certificate.

A Permanent Resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen.

A Canadian Work Permit is a temporary resident Visa issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to grant permission to foreign workers seeking to engage in employment in Canada.

A Study Permit is a document that gives you permission to study and remain in Canada on a temporary basis.
