Wildlife Lands Technician

Overview

Position Description:
The Land Stewardship Unit of the Fish and Wildlife Branch requires Wildlife Lands Technicians to assist with various habitat and wildlife monitoring projects. The position is based in Winnipeg at 200 Saulteaux Crescent, with frequent day trips and some extended stays outside the city. Technicians will assist with monitoring efforts for Game Birds and species at risk across Manitoba in various urban areas, Wildlife Management Areas, and Community Pastures. Responsibilities will also include data entry, lab work, and field equipment maintenance.

Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. when in the office, with occasional early mornings, evenings, overtime, and weekends required when conducting fieldwork.
• Rate of pay: $14.30/hr
• Duration: mid May – late August 2022
• Two positions are available

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct population and habitat surveys for grassland birds, nightjars, chimney swifts, and marsh birds
• Camera trap photo review and analysis
• Assist with banding Canada geese and other waterfowl in southern Manitoba
• General wildlife monitoring data entry and mapping
• Wildlife Management Area signage installation and other infrastructure maintenance
• Provide support for other Branch priorities as assigned

Qualifications

Mandatory Requirements:
• Must be enrolled in a natural resource management, biology, environmental studies or related program, with intentions to return to studies in the fall of 2022.
• Must be enrolled in the Province of Manitoba’s Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) to be considered (more details can be found at: https://www.gov.mb.ca/csc/step/).
• Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision
• Ability and interest to work outdoors for long periods of time under diverse weather conditions
• Comfortable with handing wildlife such as waterfowl
• Experience using Microsoft Office programs
• Good organizational skills
• Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License

Desired Skills:
• Experience operating 4x4 trucks, ATVs, motor boats, and canoes or kayaks
• Basic bird identification skills
• Experience handing birds and other wildlife
• Basic GIS and mapping skills
