Park Interpreter

Overview

Park Interpreters provide guided experiences to inspire stewardship of our park system’s natural features, culture and history. Programming includes operating park visitor centres, trail walks and site tours, illustrated talks, roving trailheads and recreation areas, school programs, and virtual programs/webinars.

Under the direction of the Park District Manager and Senior Park Interpreter, Park Interpreters at the KA3 level are responsible for planning and delivering programs in their park district, and supervise interpretive assistants and volunteers. Candidates who do not satisfy all the essential criteria may be considered for an under fill/developmental opportunity as a Park Interpreter at the KA2 level.

Opportunities currently available include:
 Grand Beach: 26-week position (May-October). Position is at Grand Beach during the summer season, and then moves to Birds Hill for fall programming in September and October. Bunkhouse accommodations are available at Grand Beach.
 Hecla/Grindstone: 19-week position (May-September). Position based out of the Hecla School Interpretive Centre, delivering regular tours of the historic Hecla Village, weekend amphitheatre presentations and trail hikes. Bunkhouse accommodations are available.
 St. Malo: 18-week position (May-September). Position based out of the campground, with programming focused on daily beach safety roving, along with weekend amphitheatre presentations and trail hikes. Bunkhouse accommodations are available.
 Whiteshell: 14-week position (May-August). Position based out of the Alfred Hole Visitor Centre at Rennie, with programming delivered at trails and campgrounds throughout the North Whiteshell. Bunkhouse accommodations are available at either Nutimik Lake or Rennie.

An eligibility list will be created for Park Interpreter seasonal positions during the 2023 season and will remain in effect for six months to fill any vacancies in the following provincial parks: Birds Hill, Grand Beach, Hecla/Grindstone, St. Malo, Spruce Woods, and Whiteshell. Individuals interested in working as a Park Interpreter in any of these locations are encouraged to apply for this competition.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:
 Prior to May 2023, completion of at least one-year post-secondary education in a related field such as biological/natural sciences, natural resources management, education, Indigenous studies, history, recreation/tourism. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
 Strong verbal communication skills including experience conducting public presentations.
 Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with visitors of all ages.
 Effective written communication skills.
 Ability to work independently under minimal supervision with good time management skills

Desired Qualifications:
 Experience working in the field of interpretation, including developing and delivering interpretive programs at a natural, cultural or historical site, such as a park or museum.
 Knowledge of Manitoba’s natural and cultural heritage.
 Knowledge of rules and regulations related to Manitoba provincial parks.
 Experience supervising employees or volunteers.
 Bilingual (French and English).

Conditions of Employment:
 Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
 Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.
 Must be willing and physically able to perform the duties of the position including working in various types of outdoor conditions, hiking trails, and lifting and moving items of up to 30 lbs.
 Must be willing and able to work evenings, statutory holidays and shift work.
 Ability to work weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) is required, with days off during the week.

Work schedule is a five-day workweek that includes Saturdays and Sundays for visitor centre hours and public programming, with regular days off mid-week. Some evening shifts are required.

Successful candidates will be required to attend provincial training annually.
