Position Overview:

The Laboratory Technologist in the Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program will play a crucial role in supporting the program's operations and enhancing the learning experience for students. This position oversees and maintains the operation of the mechatronics, robotics and electronics laboratory facilities including overall planning, servicing, repairing, purchasing and designing for these laboratories. This position provides technical assistance to students, faculty and the Academic Chair in all matters concerning these laboratory facilities. The incumbent will maintain, record keep and control capital equipment and operating supplies within the overall Russ Edwards School’s mechatronics, robotics and electronics lab budget. The position is also responsible for managing software licenses, assisting with the commissioning of new equipment, instructing on equipment use, supporting student labs, and serving as a resource for capstone projects and applied research. The incumbent ensures that labs operate as required to deliver the Russ Edwards School’s mechatronics, robotics and robotics curriculum and that these labs operate within standard industry safety guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in Student Labs: Support students during lab sessions by providing technical assistance and guidance. Ensure that lab environments are safe and conducive to learning.
  • Resource for Capstone Projects and Applied Research: Serve as a resource for students working on capstone projects and applied research. Provide technical support and guidance to help students achieve their project goals.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with faculty, staff, and students to support the overall goals of thethe Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program. Participate in team meetings and contribute to program development.
  • Maintenance of Equipment: Ensure all equipment used in the Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program is properly maintained and operational. Perform routine checks and repairs as needed.
  • Participate with faculty and chair in determining the required laboratory equipment and make recommendations of purchases.
  • Investigate, research and update on the use of the latest technological developments and innovations in the mechatronics and robotics industry.
  • Software Licensing: Manage the licensing of software used within the program. Ensure all software is up-to-date and compliant with licensing agreements.
  • Commissioning of Equipment: Assist with the setup and commissioning of new equipment. Ensure that all new equipment is installed correctly and ready for use.
  • Instruction of Equipment Use: Provide instruction and training to students and staff on the proper use of equipment. Develop instructional materials and conduct workshops as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum three (3) year Diploma in Mechanical or Electronics or electro-mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible industry experience, in an electronics, mechatronics or robotics laboratory environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in the use of various types of equipment and software used in technology and innovation programs. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in configuring and using Siemens Totally Integrated Automation Portal (TIA Portal) and Factory Talk by Rockwell Automation
  • Must be able to determine, identify and anticipate the requirements of mechatronics, robotics and electronics lab facilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. Strong customer service orientation.
