ACC nursing instructor wins innovation in education award

An ACC Practical Nursing instructor has won an award from the Canadian Association of Practical Nurse Educators (CAPNE) for her contributions to innovative teaching methods in the field of practical nursing.

Crystal Jensen was recognized by peers and received her award in late October during CAPNE’s 15th annual national conference in Toronto.

“I am truly honoured to receive such a prestigious award,” said Jensen. “I strive to provide students with exceptional learning experiences that simulate real-life clinical situations. I am grateful that I work with a group of dynamic colleagues that are supportive, motivating and encouraging.”

The CAPNE Innovation in Practical Nurse Education Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated new, innovative approaches to traditional models for practical nursing education.

Jensen was nominated for the award by Tracy Danielson, a fellow nursing instructor at the college. “Crystal has spent many hours, both on and off the clock, to raise funds towards a permanent simulation lab at ACC,” said Danielson. “She continues to work on expanding the opportunity and usage of simulation to enhance clinical and lab experience.”

“Crystal has a natural ability to bring in new ways of classroom instruction and is always looking to make the theory component of education fresh and creative,” said Kirk Joyce, Chair of Health Programs at ACC. “Her approach to creating realistic lab settings for students is key to their success, preparing them to tackle the challenges of clinical settings during their practicum placements.”

“It was a pleasure to present this award to Crystal,” said CAPNE Chair Carly Hall. “Crystal stood out as a strong nominee who incorporates the use of innovative simulation technologies in her classes.”

Jensen is an ACC alumna, having graduated from the Practical Nursing program in 2000. She has been an instructor at the college since 2009 and continues to work in the intensive care unit at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
