ACC students compete for national honours

Five students from Assiniboine Community College are representing Team Manitoba at the 21st Skills Canada Competition this week in Saskatoon.

The students all won medals at the provincial Skills Manitoba competition last month in Winnipeg, earning their way to the national challenge by proving themselves to be the best in their category.

More than 550 students and apprentices from across the country are in Saskatoon, showcasing their talent and vying for medals in more than 40 different hands-on contests as they tackle real-life scenarios in competitions that are designed and judged by industry professionals and educators. The challenges are also timed, meaning that students have to beat the clock as well as their opponents.

“We’re extremely proud of our team, who are proving that ACC students can compete with the best of the best from anywhere in Canada,” said George MacLean, ACC’s Dean of Trades and Technology. “Success at these types of challenges proves that the hands-on learning you get in an ACC classroom is perfect preparation for your career.”

Along with bragging rights, student competitors are able to network with leaders in their industry. Heading to Saskatoon to compete are gold medallists:

  • Jordan Neufeld, from Niverville, in IT Network Systems Administration
  • Stephanie Kelbert, from Alexander, in IT Software Solution for Business
  • Kelly Semenko, from Brandon, in Plumbing
  • Melanie Moulder, from Arden, in Website Development

It’s Neufeld’s second trip to Skills Canada; he brought home a bronze medal at last year’s competition in Toronto, part of an ACC contingent of six who earned three medals. Joining them will be silver medallist:

  • Evan Melanson, from Brandon, in Mechanical CAD

He’s representing ACC on Team Manitoba after the gold medallist was unable to attend. College staff and instructor-coaches are also in Saskatoon this week to cheer the students on in their competitions.

Since 2005, ACC has brought home two gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals from Skills Canada.

Opening ceremonies for the 2015 Skills Canada Competition are on Wednesday evening, May 27, with competitions taking place Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29.
