Roberto Alonzo has committed to the Cougar men’s soccer program for the fall 2022 season.

Born in Honduras, Alonzo moved to Canada with his family in 2014, at the age of 11. Navigating a new country and language was not an easy task but soccer became the familiar outlet. He graduated from Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School in 2021 while playing soccer for the Plainsmen. Alonzo is a solid center back, a physical defenseman standing 5’10. He played for the Plainsmen and Cougars coach McLachlan when the team went undefeated in 2019 winning their 5th consecutive league championship. Alonzo and the Plainsmen followed that up with a bronze medal in the AAAA provincials. The following season was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic and Alonzo was not able to compete his final year in high school.

“Roberto is passionate about soccer. It shows in his play on the field and how he competes hard for every ball,” said head coach Chris McLachlan. “He is a physical player and has a good understanding of how to control the back line. I am confident he will make an immediate impact on the team.”

Alonzo has played soccer from a very young age, he took to it early and developed skills and a competitive edge alongside his older brother Carlos.

“I never give up until I get the ball. I am motivated and want to win,” said Alonzo. “I will give a piece of myself to this team and I hope to improve the team.”

Alonzo has kept busy the last year by working on his physical condition, playing soccer recreationally, delivering newspapers and working for a cleaning company. After high school courses exposed him to the automotive world, his goal is to work in the industry. He will be taking the colleges Automotive Technician program in the fall.
