Annual Dauphin Co-op partnership benefits Parkland Campus Carpentry students

Yesterday, the students in the Carpentry and Woodworking program at Assiniboine Community College’s (ACC) Parkland Campus enjoyed a kick-off BBQ.

ACC has partnered with the Dauphin Consumers Co-op for the past nine years to have students and faculty build ready-to-move homes for sale in the community. Once the cottage is sold, the Co-op donates $5,000 through the ACC Foundation for Parkland Campus Carpentry and Woodworking student awards.

These cash rewards provide an added bonus of financial recognition for the dedication these students have to their studies and academic achievement.

“The Dauphin Co-op Building Centre is pleased to team up with ACC for another RTM build,” said Stephen Bunka, Dauphin Co-op Building Division Manager. “We feel that the hands-on, real life learning gives the students an important head start into their carpentry/construction careers.”

“Our co-op partnership is one that greatly benefits our students,” said Stuart, instructor of ACC’s Carpentry and Woodworking Program. “They have the opportunity to be part of a team and learn how to build a house from the ground up under the direction and support of faculty.”

The kick-off BBQ was organized for the twelve pre-employment Carpentry and Woodworking students that will be building the house, as well as invited community members.
