Assiniboine accepting nominations for annual alumni awards

The college is now accepting nominations for its annual alumni awards, which will be presented at the college’s upcoming Alumni Advancement Dinner on March 8, 2018.

“The Alumni Association’s board of directors look forward to this time of year – it’s exciting to see all the nominations that are submitted,” said Wayne Kirk, President of Assiniboine’s Alumni Association. “The recipients of these awards are typically nominated by their peers, employers or family and you can really see the impact Assiniboine’s alumni have had in their communities and local economies.”

Individuals can nominate an Assiniboine alumnus for one of three awards.

  1. Community Service Award: awarded to an alumnus of the college who has positively impacted the quality of people’s lives through service to others.
  2. Distinguished Alumni Award: awarded to an alumnus of the college who has distinguished themselves in both their chosen profession and their community.
  3. One to Watch Award: awarded to an alumnus of the college, 30 years or younger, who has demonstrated exceptional achievement and significant contribution to their profession or community.

There is also the Excellence in Teaching Award, which will be presented to a current faculty member who has made an extraordinary contribution to teaching and the student experience.

“It’s hard to only have one recipient for each category when there are so many alumni throughout the province, across the country and beyond, who are doing amazing things,” said Lisa Huston, Alumni Relations Coordinator at Assiniboine. “Our Advancement Dinner provides a venue for us to come together and celebrate all their successes.”

The deadline for nominations is Friday, November 24, 2017. For nomination forms and more information, visit assiniboine.net/alumniawards or email alumni@assiniboine.net.

Awards will be presented at the annual Alumni Advancement Dinner, held at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts at the college’s North Hill campus on March 8, 2018. Tickets for the dinner go on sale in January 2018.

Last year’s recipients included Lance Barkley, owner and operator of LRB Electric in Virden, Man., who won the Distinguished Alumni Award and Sarah-Jane Speers who received the Community Service Award for her efforts in bringing the Westman community together during the Fort McMurray wildfires. The One to Watch Award was presented to Camilla Timmer who is a Partner with West-Can Human Resource Solutions in Brandon, Man. Crystal Jensen, an instructor in the Practical Nursing program at the college’s Brandon campus, was given the Excellence in Teaching Award.
