Assiniboine to deliver medical lab, combined lab and x-ray programs
December 23, 2025
Assiniboine College will introduce two new programs—Medical Laboratory Technology and Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist. The province has invested $3.6 million in the launch of the programs.
“We are pleased to see support for these programs,” said Mark Frison, President of Assiniboine College. “They are important, particularly for rural health care, where they have a need for professionals trained in both disciplines. We’ve been working toward offering these programs for a while and are pleased with this initial investment to help bring them to life.”
Medical Laboratory Technology and Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist are both two-and-a-half-year diploma programs, and students will receive extensive work integrated learning experience throughout. The college will welcome up to 20 students into each program every second year.
Medical Laboratory Technology prepares graduates to conduct medical laboratory tests, experiments and analyses to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Students in Combined Laboratory and X-Ray will develop the skills and knowledge needed to perform laboratory tests, general radiography and electrocardiograms.
“The demand for these programs is high and driven largely by the increasing need for diagnostic services as the provincial population ages,” said Dr. Deanna Rexe, Vice President Academic at Assiniboine. “We look forward to welcoming our first group of students to embark on these important careers in healthcare.”
The college aims to launch the programs in 2027. Those interested in finding out more can visit assiniboine.net/medlab and assiniboine.net/labxray where they can sign up for an interest list to receive more information as it’s available.
