Assiniboine College and PICS Society partner to deliver free, online green construction training to 1600 learners across Canada.
A new national training initiative is set to empower tradespeople and career changers with in-demand green building skills. Launching in September 2025, the Green Building and Retrofitting Program will offer free, fully online training. The five-course, 100-hour micro credential program is designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable construction skills in Canada’s evolving workforce.

“This program is a powerful example of how education can respond to the urgent needs of both the environment and the economy. By equipping learners with practical, job-ready skills in green construction, we’re helping to build a more sustainable future for Canadians,” said Michael Cameron, Dean, Community Development, Assiniboine College.

The program is tailored for experienced tradespeople, internationally trained workers, and those looking to transition into the green construction sector. Each course is delivered in English through an online learning platform, and will include real-world Canadian case studies, scenario-based tasks, and optional weekly Q&A sessions via Zoom.

Delivered by Assiniboine College in partnership with the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society and funded by Employment and Social Development Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, this program will train up to 1600 students from across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories.

Participants in the program will earn digital badges for each course and a final certificate upon completion. A separate work-integrated learning component will also be available through provincial service providers, offering hands-on experience to complement the online training.

As part of the preparation for this programming, Assiniboine College is also recruiting remote instructors to help deliver the program nationwide. These roles support adult learners across Canada in the completion of sustainable construction practices.

“We’re proud to work with industry professionals on a national initiative that makes high-quality training accessible to learners across Canada. Whether you’re a seasoned tradesperson or someone looking to pivot into a new career, this program offers the flexibility, support, and relevance needed to succeed in today’s green economy.” added Cameron.

Registration for the program is now open, with the first intake beginning September 2, 2025, with new offerings available monthly. For more information visit assiniboine.net/programs/green-building-and-retrofitting.
