Avison Adds Tenacity To Cougars Women’s Soccer Team

BRANDON, Man. (July 11th, 2023) — Kathleen Avison has committed to play for the Cougars women’s soccer team in the fall.

Avison is a 5’3” midfielder from Gillam, Manitoba. She attended Kildonan East Collegiate and competed for the Reivers. She is a multisport athlete having seen success in basketball, rugby and badminton but ultimately soccer left its mark as her favourite sport. In 2020, she won the Reivers Junior Varsity Athlete of the Year and won Varsity Athlete of the Year in 2022.

“I am very fast and tenacious, stopping at nothing to get the ball and move it up the field,” said Avison. “I love the dynamic, team-oriented nature of soccer as well as how fast and hard I can play.”

She bounced around playing youth soccer in the Winnipeg area for various clubs including North Kildonan CC, East End CC, Oakbank CC and now in the women’s league for the Gateway Celtic. In U14, Avison won the Winnipeg Championship with the Gateway Flyers. The following year she played on a U15 boys team, the Phoenix Football Club, and won the 2019 Winnipeg Golden Boy Tournament of Champions.

“Katie combines good speed with good vision,” said Cougars coach Mark Dabbs. “She makes good decisions with the ball and is mindful of keeping possession but always looking to turn that possession into a scoring opportunity.”

Avison is also multifaceted in her talents. She has a passion for playing the guitar and performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra with the River East Guitar Ensemble in 2018 and 2019. She also enjoy enjoys various artistic pursuits like woodworking and architectural design.

Avison has family in Brandon and is looking forward to having their support while she goes to school and plays for the Cougars. She was an honour roll student for the duration of her time in high school. Avison will be taking the college’s Land and Water Management program in the fall.
