Cancilla Commits to Cougars

Sydney Cancilla will be joining the Cougar women's hockey roster for the 2019-2020 season

Assiniboine Cougar women’s hockey has strengthened their roster with the addition of Winnipeg product, Sydney Cancilla.

Cancilla attends St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) in Winnipeg and is a 5’6 forward for the Flames. This season the Flames won the Female World Sport School Challenge hosted by SMA. In her first season with the Flames she was named to the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League All-Star team for 2015-16 after leading her team in goals and points in both the regular season and playoffs.

She was also selected by Hockey Manitoba as a top 100 player in 2015-16 and reached top 27 most recently in 2018. She received the SMA Athletic and Commitment Award in 2015-16 and Christ the King School’s most valuable athlete in 2013-14. She enjoys water sports, fishing, tubing and wake boarding as well as playing soccer and competing in track and field.

“I am excited about the opportunity to continue my hockey career and education at a recognized college while still being close to home,” said Cancilla. “It gives me a sense of comfort.”

“I’d like to become a police officer someday and I understand that the course at the college has to offer is a great start to achieving that goal.”

“I’m positive and try my best to make sure my teammates heads are held high,” said Cancilla. “I am dependable and am good at creating opportunities for my team. I am also a two-ended player having strength in both offense and defence.”

“Sydney brings a team-first attitude,” said coach Bertone. “She is a strong skater with an amazing shot. With a quick release she will be an offensive threat every time she is on the ice.”

With the goal of becoming a police officer, Cancilla will be applying to the college’s police studies program in the fall.
