Meagan Carnegie of Winnipeg, MB has committed to the Cougars women’s hockey 2022-23 roster.

Carnegie is set to graduate Cum Laude from Winnipeg’s Vincent Massey Collegiate in June. She plays in the Manitoba Female Hockey League for the U18 AAA Winnipeg Ice. Standing 5’10, Carnegie is a physical defensive player amassing 7 points this season with the Ice. Carnegie and the Winnipeg Ice were provincial finalists in 2021/22. She was also a member of the U15 Bantam Twins Hockey team that won the city championship.

Hockey is a valuable aspect of the Carnegie household—Carnegie’s dad played high-level hockey and continues to coach and referee. Her mother holds various positions on hockey boards while Meagan and her brother play, referee and time-keep. She is a level 2 referee and timekeeper and received the South Winnipeg Hockey Association’s Most Promising Referee Award in 2018/19. This month Carnegie was awarded the Hockey Winnipeg Dale England Memorial Scholarship for officials. Carnegie is also a volunteer instructor with the Bauer First Shift Program and the Hockey Winnipeg Female Jamboree.

“I’m an aggressive player and my height gives me the ability to show my presence on the ice by separating the opposing players from the puck,” said Carnegie. “Hockey is more than a sport, it’s a lifestyle. I have made so many lifelong friendships playing the sport and it’s helped me become the person I am today.”

While hockey is number one for Carnegie, she is a multi-sport athlete having also played soccer, volleyball, softball and rugby. She also plays ball hockey as a member of Team Manitoba, attending nationals in 2019 and again in 2021.

“Meagan is going to be a great addition to our program with her size and solid defensive zone coverage,” said head coach Tony Bertone. “She is driven by a commitment to her defensive game. She takes great pride in offensive players not wanting to be in the corners with her and battling one on one.”

Carnegie will attend the college’s Public Safety program in the fall.

“It is in my nature to want to help others and provide support for those in need,” said Carnegie. “I believe this program will complement my personality and personal goals.”
