Cougar Weekend Update Nov 11, 2018

Women’s Volleyball

The Cougars lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16) against Saint Bonfiace Les Rouges Friday night. Maddy Neufeld led the Cougars with eight kills.

On Saturday, the Cougars lost a heart-breaker to Saint Boniface in five sets 3-2 (2-250, 25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 16-14). Jessi Coulter led the way with 16 kills.

Men’s Volleyball

On Friday, the Cougars defeated Les Rouges in five sets (25-21, 11-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-13). Will Hatherley led the way with 20 kills and Paycen Warkentin had 14.

On Saturday, Les Rouges defeated the Cougars in five sets (26-24, 17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 12-15). Will Hatherley had 14 kills, Paycen Warkentin had 12 and Braden Campbell chipped in eight.

Hockey

The Cougars hosted their CanAm College Cup this weekend with Friday night representing a battle between the No. 1 ranked team in the West Region, the Minot State Beavers, against Assiniboine who is ranked No. 2. The Beavers scored into an empty net to defeat the Cougars 2-0. Mackenzie Balogh scored for the Beavers while Waskada’s Haley Wickham added the empty net goal.

On Saturday morning, the Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Polar Ice. Jasmin Denby led the way with two goals and two assists. Karli Frederick had a goal and two assists and Simone Turner-Cummer added a goal.

In the second game on Saturday, the Cougars played the ACHA Division 2 defending champions to a 1-1 draw. Erica McIntosh scored for the Cougars while Kayla Etreni scored for Lakehead.

After round-robin play, Lakehead finished first with two wins and a tie. Minot was second with two wins and a loss while the Cougars finished third with a record of one win, one loss and a tie and the Polar Ice failed to pick up a win.

In the championship final, Minot avenged its 5-4 loss to Lakehead in tournament play to win 4-2 and win the CanAm Cup. Haley Wickham, Gabi Wigness, Mackenzie Balogh and Bryana Bergeron scored for Minot while Etreni and Allison Pages scored for Lakehead.

Lakehead wasn’t ranked prior to the tournament because they hadn’t played in the requisite number of games, but the team is expected to be placed near the top of the West Region.

In the bronze game, the Cougars fell 3-1 to the Polar Ice. Erin Doherty scored the lone Cougars marker while Sarah Hnytika netted two goals and Courtney Kruse added one for the Polar Ice.
