Cougar Weekend Update Nov 26

Volleyball teams come away with 3 of 4 game wins against the Providence University Pilots.

The return of Erica Scott proved to be just what the Cougars (2-6) needed as Assiniboine rolled to back-to-back wins at home against the Providence Pilots (0-4).

On Friday, Scott returned and helped lead the attack with nine kills in a sweep (25-20, 25-10, 25-10) over the Pilots. Paige Donald was unstoppable, adding 10 kills as she continued to find the line deep in the court on the Providence defence which had no answer for the two Assiniboine left sides. Jordanna Chartrand chipped in with nine digs while Kalin Winter had 19 assists.

Saturday was a carbon copy of the previous night as the Cougars took three straight sets (27-25, 25-12, 25-23). Scott led the Cougars with 12 kills while Winter and Donald added five. Jessi Coulter was instrumental in the victory with 13 digs, three kills and two aces.

The Cougars hit the break in fourth place in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. The team returns to the court Jan. 11 in Winnipeg and hosts their first home game against CMU on Jan. 25 and 26 in Brandon.

In men’s action, the Cougars split their two-game set with Providence.

On Friday, Assiniboine (4-4) couldn’t find their game as the Pilots (3-1) defeated the Cougars 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 26-24, 25-23). Paycen Warkentin finished with 12 kills and five blocks while Braden Campbell had eight kills and four blocks.

Saturday provided a measure of redemption for the Cougars as Warkentin was a beast at the net with 15 blocks in a five-set win (25-21, 32-30, 20-25, 10-25, 15-10). Will Hatherley led the attack with 15 kills, Campbell added 11 and Lucas Vasconcelos had 10 kills.

The men’s team go to the break in second spot in the MCAC. The men play Saint Boniface in Winnipeg on Jan. 11. Their next home game isn’t until Jan. 25 against CMU.

The Cougars next action comes on the ice when the women’s hockey team hosts North Dakota State University on Dec. 1 at 4:30 p.m. and Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Sportsplex in Brandon.
