Cougars Add Bandits Middle

BRANDON, Man. (April 26th, 2023) — Kiera Virgo has committed to play for the Assiniboine Cougars women’s volleyball team next season.

Virgo is a product of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She started playing school volleyball in grade six and fell in love with the sport. She went on to play the next level with the Winnipeg U13 Bisons club team and then joined the Bandits Volleyball Club in U16. She is a 5’9" middle blocker and won a tier 1 division 3 national bronze medal with the U17 Bandits. She is co-captain this season playing in the U18 division.

Virgo will soon graduate from Institut Collégial Vincent Massey Collegiate (ICVMC) where she played her final high school volleyball season for the Trojans. She has consistently been a on the starting line-up for the Trojans through grade eleven and again in her graduating year, when the team was a Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) ‘AAAA’ finalist. Virgo was named an MHSAA graduating all-star.

“I have a good presence at the net and a good vertical,” said Virgo. “I cant wait to meet new people and have this opportunity to continue playing volleyball.”

Beyond volleyball, Virgo enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, golf and soccer. She also works as a lunch monitor for grades 2 and 3 at École Crane in Winnipeg.

“Good middle players are at a premium and we are excited to have Kiera join us,” said Cougars coach Kevin Neufeld. “She comes from a winning program having played in the 4A finals in her senior year.”

Virgo has maintained academic honour roll with distinction for the duration of high school. She has a 94% average in her graduating year and will be taking the college’s Practical Nursing program in the fall.

The Assiniboine Cougars teams compete in men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s futsal (a variation of indoor soccer) in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) with the winner competing for the Canadian College Athletics Association (CCAA) championship. The women’s hockey team play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).
