Kathryn Fischer has committed to the Cougar women’s hockey team.

Fischer grew up in a hockey town with a population of about 8,000, in Fort Frances, Ontario. She was always in the rink, enjoyed the competitive edge and knew she had to play too. It quickly became her favourite sport and has been a focal point and source of joy in her life.

At 5’5”, she plays bigger than her size and is a solid defender. Fischer played for the Fort Frances Muskies, where she was assistant captain for the last two seasons. She amassed one goal and eight assists in eleven games played last season. During her PeeWee and Bantam seasons, Fischer rostered on the boys team where she was named Most Valuable Defensive. She received Rookie of the Year in her grade nine season, Most Dedicated in grade 10 and a Most Valuable Player award in her Bantam year of hockey.

“My strongest attributes include reading the ice and setting up plays for my team,” said Fischer. “I am effective at pinching on the blue line and have a strong shot. I enjoy winning battles in my own end and I give 100% every time I’m on the ice.”

Sport and her community hold a special place in Fischer’s heart. She has given back to the community by volunteering with KidSport and Jumpstart programs in Ontario communities. She also helps at the local community garden, and through hockey initiatives has helped at the local food bank, Salvation Army, Christmas Parade and ringing “Christmas Bells” for charity.

“Kathryn is a solid defensive player with the ability to make that pass out of the D zone, hit the stretch player in the neutral zone or carry the puck out,” said head coach Tony Bertone. “She showed great commitment and promise at our spring camp and I’m really looking forward to working with her and growing her game in the fall.”

Fischer recently graduated with honours from Fort Frances High School. She is interested in becoming a Police Officer or Paramedic and is enrolled in the college’s Public Safety program in the fall.
