The Cougars Hockey program is excited to announce the signing of two new defensive players for the 2020-21 season, Cora Fijala and Madison Barteaux.

Cora Fijala is a committed defender from Manitou, Manitoba who has always planned to pursue a collegiate hockey career. Fijala is a member of the Nellie McClung Collegiate honor roll and currently sits as their Student Council President. When she isn’t laced up in skates, she spends her free time volunteering at the Manitou personal care home. Fijala has been accepted into the college’s Practical Nursing program and will commence her studies in the 2020-21 academic year.

The number one draw to the Cougars’ program for Fijala, was the coaching staff.

The program is full of hardworking and compassionate people,” says recruit Cora Fijala. “I am looking forward to meeting all the new players and becoming a part of the team.

Cougars Hockey Head Coach Tony Bertone is pleased with the recruits and the skills they will bring.

“Cora is a hardworking and physical player,” said Bertone. “She is a team player with exceptional leadership skills and the ability to play both centre and defense with the added benefit of a strong right-hand shot”.
Madison Barteaux is a defensive player from Foxwarren, Manitoba and currently sits as the Assistant Captain for the Yellowhead Chiefs. Barteaux has always wanted to pursue a career in the social worker field, which made her a perfect fit for the Social Service Work program that she is accepted into for 2020-21 academic year.

“I chose Assiniboine Community College because I have only ever heard good things about their successful program and I get the opportunity to continue playing hockey”.
“Barteaus is a strong skater who has good vision and can make that first pass out of your zone on the tape,” said Bertone.
“Cora is the type of player with the talent who can be put on the ice for penalty kill and power plays".
