In a season where goals have been hard to come by, Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars played their best match of the season and found the back of the net in week five of the 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s soccer season.

Rookie midfielder Jafet Sandoval scored both goals for the home side in a tough, hard fought 5-2 loss to Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (CMU) on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Sandoval played in all 90 minutes of the match and now has scored in all three games that Assiniboine has registered a goal in 2021.

The Brandon native and Carpentry student is one of the Cougars team captains and scored both times on well executed set pieces during the CMU match.

“Jafet is a player that we feel comfortable matching up with anyone in the league, stated Chris McLachlan, ACC head coach. “He is extremely coachable and is always looking for ways to improve his own game, and to help his teammates in whatever ways he can.”

Sandoval is also the team’s top goal scorer as he is tied for ninth in MCAC leaders with four goals.

McLachlan remarked, “Jafet’s leadership skills continue to grow. He always brings energy to the field and knows the right words to use to pick up the play of a teammate needing some extra coaching.”

The Cougars are seeking their first win of the season as they go on the road to play at Brandon Bobcats (BU) on Saturday, Oct. 16 and then at Providence University College Pilots (PUC) Pilots on Sunday, Oct. 17. First kick for both matches at 3:15 p.m. CT.
