Cougars Kickoff 2018-19 Season

The Assiniboine Cougars kicked off their opening weekend in the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference with a statement 2-1 win over last year’s champion Brandon University Bobcats in women’s soccer.

At BU, after Ashley Seekings opened the scoring for the Bobcats in the first half, the Cougars came alive in the second.
First, Ashley Robinson corralled a corner kick before sending the ball over the line to tie the game up at one. The Cougars weren’t done, however, as Stephanie Jones used her blinding speed to bury a second marker and give Assiniboine their first lead.
From there, the defence, led by Marley Quesnel and keeper Kendall Omeljanow, slammed the door shut. The win moves the team’s record to 1-0-1 after the Cougars tied the CMU Blazers 3-3 on Saturday in their season opener. Jerra Green scored two goals against the Blazers while Kendra Mansoff added a single.
In men’s action, it was difficult weekend for the Cougars. After falling to CMU 13-0 on Saturday, Assiniboine dropped a 20-0 decision on Sunday.
Jovaughn Thomas stood out for the Cougars in both contests while Alfred Tobacco was outstanding in net against Brandon University.
Assiniboine will host the Red River College Rebels on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Optimist Park. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 3:15 p.m.
