Cougars Soccer Weekend Re-cap Oct. 2

The Cougars Soccer teams were at home this weekend, playing against Providence University College Pilots Saturday afternoon, followed up with games against Canadian Mennonite University Blazers Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars Soccer teams were at home this weekend, playing against Providence University College Pilots Saturday afternoon, followed up with games against Canadian Mennonite University Blazers Sunday afternoon.

The women's team had a strong first half against the Providence University College Pilots, tailing only 0-1 at half-time. They had a challenging second half with keeper Kendall Omeljanow, injuring her hand early in the second half. Litesha Spittal stepped up and filled in the keeper position for the remainder of the game. The Pilots’s key striker proved to much for the Cougars, when she stepped on the field in the second half, and the Cougar’s lost 5-0.

The women worked hard to keep the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers at bay Sunday afternoon, again only trailing 0-1 at half-time, but in the end fell 6-0. The teams were well matched for the first half, but a couple quick plays in front of the net had the Cougars beat, and they just couldn’t find the back of the net on their chances.

The Cougar men's team had a very physical game against the Providence University College Pilots, Saturday afternoon. It was a rough game for the Cougars, with two Goalies, Brendan Henderson and Carlos Torres, leaving the game injured. Captain Alex Alvarado put on the goalie gloves and finished the game in net for the Cougars. The Cougars lost 9-0.

Sunday afternoon the Cougars came out with a renewed confidence and Marcel Tanguay was in net. They had a competitive first half, but trailed 0-2 at half-time. The Cougar’s shot out of the gate in the second half, with #17 Hillman Williams scoring in the first minute of play to make it 1-2. They kept pushing, which succeeded in Mario Urias scoring the goal to tie up the game with 18 minutes remaining in the second half. The intensity level increased and although both teams had chances, the game finished in a 2-2 tie.

This is the end of the home action for the Cougars this season. They have next weekend off and then will play the Brandon University Bobcats Saturday, October 14 at Brandon University. Women kick-off at 1 p.m. and then men at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, October 15 the Cougars head into Winnipeg to play Red River College at the Norm Konowalchuk Field, with both teams kicking off at 12 p.m.
