Brooklyn Franklin has signed on with the Cougars women’s hockey team for the 2023-24 season.

Franklin, from Chater, Manitoba, attends Elton Collegiate. She’s a 5’5” forward and assistant captain with the U18 Westman Wildcats. Cougars hockey alumnus, Blair Bodie, is an assistant coach for the team.

“She always plays with a first place effort,” said Guy Williams, head coach of the Wildcats.

Franklin has seen success in hockey, but is also a competitive softball player. She was selected as the U16 AAA Westman Magic Top Player Award in 2021 and received the Ashley Neufeld Ultimate Teammate Award in 2020.

“Brooklyn brings a full 200 foot game,” said Cougars coach Tony Bertone. “She is a strong skater, able to score goals and has a solid defensive game. She will be able to jump into our top line and play all special teams.”

“I come from a long line of hockey players,” said Franklin. “I have a good work ethic and the ability to read the ice and make plays. I’m looking forward for the opportunity to dress every game, stay close to home, and have the chance to play with one of my closest friends.”

Cougars forward, Emma Ramsey and Franklin formed a close bond as part of the Westman Wildcats team that captured the U18 Provincial Female Hockey League Championship in 2021/2022.

Franklin is academically strong, having received the highest marks in Physical Education, Computer Science, Geography, French and Life Work Planning. She was also selected to receive the Wellness of the Whole Award at her school in 2019. She plans to take the college’s Social Service Worker Program in the fall.

“I want to be able to help people each day, and I want to be able to do something different each day,” said Franklin.
