BRANDON, Man. (July 24, 2023) — Gustavo Garcia is set to join his younger brother Kevin on the Cougars men’s soccer roster in the fall.

Originally, from La Ceiba, Honduras, Garcia moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 2017 with his family. His passion for soccer runs deep and is shared with his grandfather and father, who also played. Garcia and his brother, Kevin, started playing the sport as toddlers and now it’s their turn to pay it forward and help inspire their youngest brother, who is four.

“I will bring leadership, experience, speed and strength to the team,” said Garcia. “The harder you work, the more you’ll open doors to success. I am going to work hard and am looking forward to making playoffs.”

Garcia is a five-foot-nine centre back and reached the semi-professional level of soccer as a youth in Honduras playing with Victoria and won back-to-back championships. He was sixteen years old when his family moved to Canada. He started in grade ten at Vincent Massey High School where he played soccer and captained the Vikings for three seasons. He continues to play in the Prairie Mountain Soccer League with his brother on team Honduras.

“Gustavo will bring speed and more physicality to our back line,” said Cougars coach Chris McLachlan. “He plays with poise and makes those around him better. He has good on-field chemistry with several of our players already and we anticipate seeing him fit in with the team immediately.”

Garcia will take the college’s welding program in the fall.
