Long time team member honoured

A familiar face was recently spotted in the halls at ACC. Judy Bartel paid a visit to the college to catch up with staff and friends!

Many current staff, college alumni and community members know Judy from her 25-year career in the college’s Student Services department. Initially starting at the college as a student advisor, Judy eventually became director of student services – a position she held when she retired in 2009.

Judy always took time to volunteer at many college and community events and that commitment to volunteerism has continued since she left. Believing that lives are enriched by cultural learning and awareness, she has held different roles with organizations that promote intercultural contact across the world. Here at home, she has volunteered with local organizations like Westman Immigrant Services and the Marquis Project. Her dedication to educating the community about different cultures led to her produce a radio program Cultural Connections as well as writing various articles that have been adapted to help promote Marquis.

Five years ago, she helped the Marquis Project get through some tough financial times by volunteering to manage the organization as well as take on an educator role. Most recently, she had the good fortune of visiting Bangladesh where she got to see first-hand Marquis’ initiatives at work: a project that is teaching local women how to teach children.

It’s no wonder the Marquis Project thought Judy to be the perfect recipient for this year’s Global Citizenship Award, presented to her by the Brandon based International development organization on June 17th. This award acknowledges her work in social justice and education development at home and around the world.

Judy fondly remembers many good times and good people at the college and continues to be an ambassador for ACC. The Alumni Association is very proud of her and celebrates her success!
