Lichelle Martens becomes the most recent addition to the Cougar Women’s Soccer 2021 roster. Committing to the Cougars was an easy decision for Martens as her good friend and long time teammate, Megan Beswitherick had already committed to the Cougars for the fall. The two played for the U18 MacGregor United club team and both attended MacGregor Collegiate.

The 5’6 talented dual defender and midfielder comes from Bagot, Manitoba where she enjoys sports and the great outdoors; hunting, fishing and dirt bike riding. Martens was named the MacGregor Collegiate Most Valuable Player in both soccer and basketball as well as Female Athlete of the Year in grade 10.

“I will bring my speed, corner kicks and ball control to the team,” said Martens about her strengths. “I enjoy being a part of a team. It’s a great way to stay active and meet new people.”

Co-Coach Gerry Rocan is looking forward to the additional level of competiveness Martens will add to the teams dynamic.

“Lichelle has impressive athletic ability enhanced by her level of competitiveness and determination,” said Co-Coach Gerry Rocan. “She’s a solid two-way player that will make an immediate impact on our defence.”

Martens achieved honour roll status each year in high school so far. She volunteers her time coaching basketball, with church events and with youth at the Siloam Mission. She also organized a fundraiser for the Prairie Pregnancy Center.

Growing up in a rural town, Martens is familiar with the agricultural industry and sees the growth in it. She will be taking the college’s Agribusiness program in the fall.
