The Cougars Women’s Volleyball program have signed Portage La Prairie local, Jayda Moffat, for the 2021-22 season.

Moffat, a 5’7’’ setter who took a year off after graduating from Portage Collegiate Institute, decided that the she was ready to get back on the court.

“I found myself really missing volleyball and the team aspect that comes along with it,” said Moffat. “Having the opportunity to play for the Cougars gives me that chance to play at that competitive level which has been a goal of mine.”

At a young age, a close friend persuaded Moffat to join a volleyball camp that was put on by her local club team. Knowing very little about the sport, she reluctantly joined, but after the conclusion of the first camp day she was hooked.

“I had fallen in love with the sport. I just wanted to keep practicing all the skills we had learnt,” said Moffat.

After an impressive 2020 season, Moffat was named a Volleyball Manitoba Graduating All Star and has been a part of the volleyball community through the last few seasons in the role of assistant coach for the Prairie Fire Volleyball 14U & 15U teams.

Her experience playing AAAA High School Volleyball allowed Moffat to enhance her leadership skills in difficult situations, to lift her teammates up and set the pace for the following sets. This highlighted the importance of having a positive attitude on the court.

Cougars Head Coach, Jeff Maxwell, values the knowledge that Moffat can bring to the program from her years of coaching younger club teams and time spent giving back to the sport.

“We are excited to have Jayda joining our program. She was one of the top setters in the province where she competed at a high level in high school and club” said Maxwell.

Growing up, Jayda had always wanted to become a blacksmith, which inspired her to look into welding training. Assiniboine’s program caught her attention, saying it seems “very friendly for people who do not have much experience in welding.”

Jayda has been accepted into the Welding Program at Assiniboine Community College for the 2021-22 academic year.
