Cougars and Bobcats Raise Soccer Profile in Westman

Prowler Cup Opens this Weekend

The Prowler Cup returns this Saturday for the 2016 edition between the Assiniboine Cougars and Brandon Bobcats.

The Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars women’s soccer team hosts the Brandon University (BU) Bobcats Saturday at 1 PM at BU’s Healthy Living Centre Field. The men’s action will follow at 3:15 PM.

“This is a terrific opportunity to raise the profile of the sport of soccer in Brandon,” says ACC Athletic Manager Beth Clark. “There are some new coaches and players in the mix on both sides – all eager to make a statement and lay claim to the Prowler Cup.”

Saturday will also be the launch of the first annual Westman Football Club (WFC) Day. The WFC consists of seven youth teams and 114 players between the ages of 10 and 16. All of the WFC youth soccer teams have been invited to watch the soccer games and enjoy a free BBQ.

“Saturday’s game will be a great opportunity to showcase soccer in the city,” says third year Geographic Information Systems athlete Kasie McLaughlin. “We are looking forward to the challenge come game day and hope to see lots of fans supporting the teams.”

For the last two years the Cougars and Bobcats have squared off in Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) league play, each hosting a set of regular season games. The Prowler Cup was initiated in 2014 as a friendly cross-town rivalry event between the schools and awarded based on one afternoon’s men’s and women’s games.

There is a slight format change for the 2016 Prowler Cup. This year, the school with the highest accumulative score after all four of the head-to-head games (Sept 24, Oct 16) will be crowned the champion of the “Prowler Cup”. The Cougars have yet to claim a Prowler Cup, but are looking for some strong games in their home openers. The Cougars will play all but one of their five home games this year at the BU Healthy Living Centre Field.
