Sioux Valley, Assiniboine partner for residential framing program

A 12-week Residential Framing program is now underway in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation thanks to a partnership between the community and Assiniboine Community College.

“Graduates will be able to put their new skills to work in a way that will be felt and seen by the community, said Tannis James, Director of Continuing Studies at Assiniboine. “Like much of the hands-on education we deliver, this training will have an immediate impact.”

The program includes eight weeks of classroom learning combined with four weeks of on-the-job training, during which time students will frame two new homes in Sioux Valley.

“Sioux Valley is pleased to partner with the Assiniboine Community College in delivering a community-based program designed around the housing needs of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation,” said Chief Vince Tacan. “The skills that will be learned will assist our community members to take an active role in the future construction of homes as well as developing our capacity.”

“What’s fantastic here is that members of the existing workforce in the community are upskilling and gaining the practical knowledge needed to make things happen,” said James. “We’ve seen great success when partnering with Sioux Valley in the past and I expect this program will be no different.”

Assiniboine has a long history of partnering with communities to develop and deliver place-based education. In the past, the college and Sioux Valley have collaborated on programs including Residential Plumbing, Early Childhood Education, and Security Guard.
