Assiniboine Cougars soccer teams open season Friday, home openers next week

BRANDON, MB (Sept 12, 2017)—The Assiniboine Community College Cougars men’s and women’s soccer teams are gearing up for the season with opening games on Friday, September 15 in Winnipeg against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers.

Women’s action begins at 6 p.m. with the men’s match following at 8:15 p.m. Both games are at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex and are part of regular league play for the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference.

Mark Murray is head coach of the women’s team this year after serving as assistant coach last season. His assistant this year is standout Cougars alumni player, Kate Broadhead.

The women’s team has four returning players, one of which is Crocus Plains High School graduate and goal keeper, Kendall Omeljanow. I'm very excited to see what the upcoming season holds for us,” says Omeljanow. “There are a lot of new faces and after our first few practices I believe we have great potential and I'm eager to see what the first game brings us.

Bo Kampmann is returning for his fifth season as head coach of the men’s team with Charles Lwanga and Steffie Kampmann returning as assistant coaches.

The majority of the men’s team has been practicing regularly since August and has eight returning players this season. I believe this is the strongest team ACC has ever had and I'm proud to be part of it,” says returning player, Alex Alvarado. “I believe we can achieve great things.”

Wednesday, September 20 is the women’s home opener at 5 p.m. at Christian Heritage Field against the Brandon University Bobcats. The men’s home opener is on Thursday, September 21 at 5 p.m. at Christian Heritage Field against the Bobcats.
