Team Assiniboine brings home hardware from Skill Manitoba
April 18, 2017
Fourteen students from Assiniboine Community College took home medals last Thursday.
Thirty-three Assiniboine students from a variety of skilled trades and technology programs competed this year, winning a total of five gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
“The Skills Manitoba program provides a wonderful opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired through rigorous study, many hours of practice and good old hard work and dedication,” said George MacLean, Dean of Trades & Technology at Assiniboine. “Students grow in significant ways when they allow themselves to be stretched and challenged.”
Team Assiniboine swept the podium in the Web Development, Cooking, and IT Office Software competitions. This was the first time in a number of years where Culinary Arts students participated in Skills Manitoba.
“As a group, we felt pretty good at the job we did. We weren’t sure about the outcome—of course, because you never really know—but we were confident that we did our best,” said student Tiara Ringling, a second-year Culinary Arts student. Ringling won gold in the Cooking competition. “It felt surreal. I haven’t really won anything like this before where I had to go stand on stage on a podium.”
Ringling along with the other gold medal winners now have an opportunity to join Team Manitoba in Winnipeg this June to compete at the 23rd annual Skills Canada National Competition. This multi-trade and technology competition brings together more than 500 students and apprentices from across the country to participate in over 40 competitions.
