I Have a Test…and I’m STRESSED!

As you are well aware, being a college student means that you will have to write tests and exams…it’s unavoidable. When you hear of a test coming up in your course, the natural reaction is to feel a sense of anxiety. This is common for everyone, and a little stress can be a good motivator. For some, this anxiety can be so intense, both physically and mentally, that it affects our ability to perform well when it comes time to putting our knowledge into words.

Test anxiety affects almost everyone at some point in their college life. So what should you do when you feel that sense of panic coming on? There are many tips and tricks to help you ease the tension around tests and exams. Here are five that you may wish to try.

1. Get a good sleep the night before. This tip is an obvious one. Avoid caffeine and alcohol well before turning in. Tell yourself that you have prepared well for tomorrow’s test and that cramming the evening or night before will do little to improve your result.

2. Exercise before your test! If possible, treat yourself to a walk before your test. The physical energy you expend will help calm your nerves and allow you to focus on what matters when it matters.

3. Don’t communicate with classmates. Too often students will compare how much they know about the material to be tested on with fellow students. This can only increase your anxiety. You will dwell on all the material you “don’t know” and others seemingly do.

4. Arrive at class five minutes before the test. This time will allow you to bring your heart rate down and help get you focused. It will also allow you to sit and do some deep breathing exercises to help still your thoughts so you can give all your attention to the task at hand.

5. Reward yourself. Following your test, know that you gave it your best effort. Know also that you prepared for it as best as you could be following the four tips listed above. Treat yourself to something you enjoy, realizing that when your next test comes around you have the necessary tips and tricks ready to perform your best.
